Miguel del Águila is one of my favorite composers of all time! His music is genuinely beautiful, thought-provoking, challenging, rewarding, and incredibly entertaining. He is a three-time Grammy-nominated composer with many other accomplishments under his belt!

Miguel’s music was featured on the episode “Dancing Winds” of the podcast Sound Perimeter alongside the music of Alyssa Morris. I was lucky enough to be selected as the performer of Miguel’s Silence for clarinet and piano—a piece that has had a profound impact on me. This highly melodic and expressive work was inspired by the sudden passing of the composer’s brother Nelson del Águila, and it expresses the sadness of this loss. The title Silence refers to the void or emptiness left by a person who’s absent. A voice who is no longer heard. I have interpreted this as not only in reference to death, but also to those voices that are no longer part of our lives willingly and those voices that have been forgotten over time.
