Tyler J. Guzmán
A Coloradan by birth but a Texan by choice, Tyler Guzmán is an active educator and performer in the San Antonio, TX area.
Within his private studio over the years, he has had the privilege to teach students who have gone on to win assorted contests, place in All-State competitions, and pursue music degrees at colleges and conservatories themselves. Tyler also works closely with various schools and numerous band directors in giving masterclasses and leading sectionals for clarinet students throughout the school districts the San Antonio area. Tyler takes pride in his past work as a band director in Arizona and in the San Antonio Independent School District, where he was praised for creating well-structured programs that coupled music instruction with the value of working together within the ensembles, in addition to cultivating an interest and an appreciation for the arts.
As a performer, Tyler enjoys collaborating with chamber and large ensembles as well as performing solo works. He has performed such works as von Weber’s Concerto for Clarinet no. 2 with the Colorado Mesa Symphony Orchestra and Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet in A major, K. 622 with the Four Seasons Orchestra in Scottsdale, AZ. Tyler was also a featured soloist during the 2014 Colorado Music Educators Association conference alongside the Colorado Mesa Wind Symphony, performing Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee. Tyler has had the pleasure of premiering multiple commissions by composers including Kimberly Archer, Daniel Kellog, Julie Giroux, Michael Markowski, Roshanne Etezady, and Randall Standridge. He also has performed with world-renowned artists and ensembles such as Timothy McAllister, Project Trio, JD Shaw, Lisa Pegher, and Paradise Winds. In 2019, he premiered Miguel del Águila’s Transoceánica at the International Clarinet Association’s annual ClarinetFest.
This past season, Tyler performed Mendelssohn’s Konzertstück no. 1, op. 113 alongside his husband Shaun Guzmán and the Heart of Texas Concert Band and premiered Miguel del Águila’s Silence for clarinet and orchestra with Alamo City Symphony Viva. Tyler travelled back to his home state of Colorado this past summer to perform a recital comprised of works by composers from Latin America as well as performing with the Prickly Pear Clarinet Ensemble at the ICA ClarinetFest2023 in Denver.
He is currently scheduled to appear with the Orchestra of the Incarnate Word in March 2024, performing Mozart’s famous Clarinet Concerto, with which he has previously won competitions.
Tyler completed his doctoral coursework at Arizona State University—where he also obtained his Master of Music degree—and is under the tutelage of Dr. Robert Spring and Dr. Joshua Gardner. Tyler previously studied at Colorado Mesa University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree while studying with Dr. Adam Ballif, Dr. Stephen Page, and Dr. Jun Watabe. Other teachers include Dr. Thomas Hess and Mrs. Debbie Wilson.
